RUGS WITH HISTORY
Diversity and contrast define Morocco
Within the Berber culture, until a few years ago, weaving a rug was part of its own tradition, as another daily task of women, for the well-being of the home. Unfortunately today, due to the evolution and growth of trade in this area, the Berber peoples make them to sell, which makes it not easy to find antique pieces like the ones you can find in Something Special.
It is only at the beginning of 1900 that the world of fine arts, with abstract art on the rise, echoes these dormant jewels, renowned artists such as the painter Paul Klee or Le Corbusier become interested in indigenous Berber art, which so well combines geometry and fantasy.
From then on, mainly in Switzerland, Germany, England and the United States, exhibitions and publications on Berber carpets began to be held, which made it extremely difficult to find their origins; there were hardly any studies or related texts, of which It is known that the oldest Berber carpet is dated 1798 (Christian calendar) but it is not known exactly since when the Berber people produced them.
These “vintage” or old production rugs are characterized by their natural wear, their flexibility, their naive and wild drawings of the Atlas tribes, the careful preparation of their wool, their natural dyes extracted from plants and the wefts placed on the “machines” composed of logs. All this has turned them into authentic “jewels of Berber craftsmanship”. At Something Special we offer you the possibility of getting these jewels that acquire more value over time.
Jean Cocteau said, “Cultivate what they reproach you for, that is you.” We could apply this literally to the Berber rugs, irregular in their contours, the violence of their colors, the naturalness of their wool and above all This is the disconcerting and almost wild disorder of its disposition. This is what we adore about Berber rugs, compared uselessly to oriental rugs, they are thus a true expression of life.
We want to offer you a selection of these wonderful rugs along with the new production ones, the latter manufactured with the same technique and material as before and all of them made through a 100% manual manufacturing process where, knot by knot, the Berber women go creating these jewels that we like so much.
